Barking Mad About Films, TV, and Books

One man and his dog; both barking mad about films, TV, and books

10 Original films we want to see in 2024

December 30, 2023 by Bill Leave a Comment

When we sat down to see what films we were looking forward to seeing in 2024, it was rather sad to see how many where sequels or spin offs to already existing movies.

So, we have created a separate list of them, and these are the 10 films we are looking forward to in 2024 that are new to the big screen.

  1. THE WATCHERS

We have recently read the book that the film will be based on, which revolves around a group of people trapped in a building, and watched by creatures, a kind of human zoo.

It is full of suspense and escape attempts and a thrilling finale, if done well, should become a great watch.

  1. SEIZE THEM!

A British comedy which sees the Queen overthrown in a revolution during the dark ages, which will see her on a journey to win back her home.

The cast alone should guarantee laughs a plenty.

  1. IF

Having had a huge success with the Quiet Place movies, writer/director John Krasinski now gives us a family-based adventure, this time as a young girl begins to see people’s left behind imaginary friends.

  1. IMAGINARY

Blumhouse originals tend to be far better than when they make films based on existing properties, for example we enjoyed M3gan far more than Five Nights at Freddys and Exorcist Believer, and this new movie about an imaginary friend upset about being ignored sounds like a lot of fun.

  1. MICKEY 17

An employee being regenerated after his death into a new body, with his existing memories sounds intriguing, and we will certainly be adding the book Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton that this film will be based on our to read pile.

Starring Robert Pattinson, Mark Ruffalo. Toni Collette and Steven Yeun should be enough to guarantee a watch, but the real draw is it will be directed by Bong Joon Ho, who gave us Parasite and Snowpiercer to name just two.

5 CIVIL WAR

A civil war has engulfed the entire nation and this new film by writer/director Alex Garland will follow a team of journalists sent to cover it.

This sounds like another must see from Alex who has already given us the likes of Annihilation and Ex Machina

  1. WICKED LITTLE LETTERS

We saw the trailer for this film, when we saw The Great Escaper and were in fits of laughter, based on a true story of people receiving letters full of profanities. and starring Olivia Coleman and the always brilliant Jessie Buckley, this will be high on our watch list.

  1. ARGYLLE

An author finds the spy books she are writing are mirroring real life events, with a fantastic cast and don’t tell Teddy the chihuahua, but a really cute cat, makes this action comedy from Kick Ass and Kingsman director, Matthew Vaughn one to watch.

  1. THE FALL GUY

Okay this could probably go on the sequel/reboot/spin off list being based on an 80s TV show that I used to watch, but the trailer looked like it was it’s own identity, so having not been an existing film, we included it on our new list, we will be seeing because it’s from Bullet Train director David Leith, it has a great lead cast in Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and because of the nostalgia.

IMDb also lists the original tv Fall Guy Lee Majors in the cast, so the only real question we want to know is will Gosling cover The Unknown Stuntman theme tune for the film?

And at 1. THE IRON CLAW

This true story about wrestling family, the Von Erich brothers looks like being another great sports drama.

Wrestling normally delivers in sports films as well, with the likes of Mickey Rourke Oscar nominated role in The Wrestler; Last year’s Cassandro; Fighting With My Family; The Peanut Butter Falcon and Foxcatcher.

But with a cast that includes Jeremy Allen White from the brilliant TV series, The Bear, we have high hopes this will deliver.

We will need a longer think to narrow down the 10 sequels we will want to see in 2024.
