One of our most anticipated film watches this year is the big screen adaptation of The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt.
Being of an age to remember the original series, starring Lee Majors, and from the director of Deadpool 2; Atomic Blonde; Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw and Bullet Train, we can not wait to see it.
But it also inspired us to revisit some other films based on TV shows whilst we waited, we went with those that predominantly varied from the original by adding a comedy aspect.
First up was I-Spy starring Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson in the roles played by Bill Cosby and Robert Culp in the TV show.
It’s an entertaining film with plenty of action as well.
Next, we went with Get Smart with Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway and again it was a lot like the film adaptation of I-Spy in that it has some great comedy and action sequences.
It should however be noted that we were not aware of each of the original TV shows, so we had no attachment to them.
Dwayne Johnson also starred in the movie adaptation of Get Smart, and we saw him took the David Hasselhoff role in a movie version of Baywatch.
Again, we had no real attachment to the TV show, but it did star our fav, Alexandra Daddario, so we used that as an excuse to revisit it.
Sadly, this was an overlong and not particularly funny film on our rewatch, and feels like it was a massive, missed opportunity.
The next three that we watched, we had attachments to the original series and yet with an increased comedy aspect to them, they did not taint our fond memories of the shows we had.
The first of these was The Dukes of Hazzard with Sean William Scott, Johnny Knoxville and Jessica Simpson bringing the Dukes to cinema audiences, with Burt Reynolds joining the fun as Boss Hogg.
Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar of the Broken Lizard comedy team and director of Super Troopers so he certainly knew how to increase the comedy to the film.
Again, pushing more towards the comedy, next was Starsky and Hutch from Todd Phillips who would go on to bring us The Hangover trilogy and Joker.
Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson are great as the cops, a great villain in Vince Vaughn and Snoop Dogg as Huggy Bear, it really was a great fun film.
However, the best is probably saved for last, and it possibly is significant that it also is the most like the TV show it was adapted from and that was the full-on action film, The A-Team from director, Joe Carnahan.
We are so glad we gave this a revisit as we had forgotten what a great action movie it is, with Liam Neeson in the George Peppard role; Bradley Cooper in the Dirk Benedict role; Sharlto Copley in the Dwight Schultz Role and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson taking on the iconic Mr.T role.
