We normally share a review of the previous month, but with that being December, all our movie watches had been pretty much festive rated.
So, we are going to use this as a time to review the year instead.
You can already read about our top ten films of the year here so let’s look at the television highlights.
BEST RETURING SHOW: – WILL TRENT (Disney+)
We were already fans of the Karin Slaughter books the show is based on, but we love the TV adaption even more, especially as features a chihuahua called Betty.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: The Bear (Disney +) Star Trek Lower Decks (Paramount+) Shrinking (Apple TV) Big Boys (Channel 4) Hudson and Rex (Alibi) & Colin from Accounts (BBC2)
BEST SERIES BASED ON A BOOK: A GOOD GIRLS GUIDE TO MURDER (BBC3) We really enjoyed this adaptation of the first in the Holly Jackson Book Series, and a season 2 which we assume will be based on book 2 Good Girl: Bad Blood has been announced.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Disclaimer (Apple TV) One Day (Netflix) and Insomnia (Paramount+)
BEST TV SHOW NEW: THE PENGUIN (Sky/NOW) Cristin Milioti has always been a favourite of ours, and this spin off from The Batman being an origin story of Colin Farrell’s Penguin character was excellent, thanks to these two leads outstanding performances.
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Nautilus (Amazon Prime) Red King (Alibi) Elsbeth (Sky/Now)
WHY DID YOU CANCEL IT AWARD: STAR TREK DISCOVERY/LOWER DECKS (Paramount+) We loved both these Star Trek Shows and sadly both have now been cancelled, Discovery we are especially sad about, as it seemed to be ridiculed every week on social media as Woke Trek =(
HONOURABLE MENTIONS: Renegade Nell (Disney+) and So Help Me Todd (Alibi)
Favourite Actor of 2024: We blogged about it, but watching True Detective: Night Country reminded us how great we think Jodie Foster is.
And now our Book Highlights:
We became a bit obsessed with the books of Emily Henry from Book Lovers to Beach Read, all of which seem to be heading to the big screen, with People We Meet On Vacation up first.
Coming to the big screen is Frieda McFadden’s The Housemaid was a great thriller and look forward to its adaptation.
We also loved Margot’s got money troubles by Rufi Thorpe which is to be adapted for TV.
And we loved Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent and hope one day that gets chosen for an adaptation soon.
So what about January 2025?
Film: We have already seen We Live In Time which we enjoyed, but the highlight so far has been Better Man, we wouldn’t even call ourselves big Robbie Williams fans, but this musical drama based on his life was superb and can see it ending in our end of year top films of 2025 already.
We still are hoping to fit in Wolf Man, Nosferatu and Companion at the cinema this month.
Streaming services we are looking forward to seeing The Killer’s Game, coming to prime video, as we really enjoyed the book it is based on.
On TV, despite being not big fans of reality shows, we are fully obsessed with the latest series of The Traitors (BBC1)
For drama, we enjoyed the TV adaption of the excellent JP Delaney book, Playing Nice (ITV) and are looking forward to seeing Eve Myles in The Crow Girl (Paramount+), the adaption of the book we loved reading last year.
For home viewing, it has been a bit of a mixture of catching up on films we missed in December due to out festive viewing so have no theme in particular, but we have decided this year to celebrate the genius of the late, great Robin Williams, so will be doing Williams Wednesdays as we check out his film work.
Books: We really enjoyed thriller The Girlfriend by Michelle Frances which is to be adapted by Amazon Prime and a lot of Creature Commando’s comics as the tv adaptation has not been picked up tot be shown in the UK yet.
Other than that, music wise, we have had the Better Man soundtrack pretty much on repeat.
