Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again and time for our March Barking Mad About Films Newsletter.
In our newsletter, we will share some of our thoughts and watches of the previous month and what we are looking forward to in the current month.
So, without any further ado, welcome to our March update….
BARKING MAD ABOUT MARCH
This month, amongst the films we watched, we did a rewatch of all the Ghostbusters movies ahead of seeing Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.
Check out our blog for our ratings of the franchise here.
We revisited Rob Zombie’s Devils Rejects trilogy.
We also watched The brilliant Starship Troopers and thanks to a charity shop find, ended up watching its two direct to DVD live action sequels as well.
Ahead of Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley in the fourth movie, coming to Netflix, we also revisited the original Beverly Hills Cop trilogy.
We fitted in a couple more Jodie Foster films for our rewatch of her back catalogue.
On the 28th, we did a double bill of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later.
We also fitted in some award nominated movies, including a double bill of Paul Mescal films in Aftersun and All of us Strangers.
Teddy finally got to see the standout from the Oscars in Messi, the dog, who puts in a great performance as Scoop in the excellent Anatomy of a Fall.
We also have been watching some movies based on TV shows we loved when we were younger, ahead of The Fall Guy being released, including The A-Team and Starsky and Hutch.
We also enjoyed the remake of Road House, this one seems to have split audiences, but we loved it, especially given this version doesn’t end against a back drop of animal corpses, like the original.
It has also been announced that Tim Burton’s next project is expected to be a new version of Attack of the 50-foot woman, so we watched the 1958 original and previous Daryl Hannah starring 1983 remake.
As ever, you can see every movie that we watched on our Letterboxd Account.
BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA
We managed three visits to the cinema in February.
We started the month with the stunning Dune Part 2, which we much preferred to part one.
Next up was another mixed bag from Blumhouse, in imaginary friend horror, Imaginary, Chauncey the bear was a good character, and it had a very good, in dreams battle ending (think Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors) but it felt like a wasted opportunity.
Sadly, our cinema didn’t show Late Night with the Devil or Lisa Frankenstein, which is how we found ourselves watching current subject of bile on the internet, Madame Web, we thought it was ok, sure it had faults, but we were left entertained, and that is all we really want from a film sometimes.
Next up was Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and much like Afterlife, it felt bogged down by its long runtime, it was enjoyable but for us a letdown.
We ended the month, with Sydney Sweeney nun horror, Immaculate with an ending that needs to be seen to be believed, but it won’t be for everyone.
BARKING MAD ABOUT SYDNEY SWEENEY.
We have ended up seeing Sydney in a few films this year, including 3 at the cinema with Anyone But You and this month’s Madame Web and Immaculate.
Yet, we would hardly say we are her biggest fans, we really didn’t enjoy Euphoria, the TV series she is best known for, so only really knew her as the rich kid from the first series of The White Lotus.
As well as the cinema visits, this year we have also seen her in Blumhouse supernatural thriller, Nocturne, where she plays an ambitious Piano Player and having seen her spider-based film Madame Web, we saw her face ants in low budget B-Horror Dead Ant.
By far the best film we have seen her in this year though has been Reality, based on the true story of an NSA contractor accused of leaking classified government information.
BARKING MAD ABOUT BOOKS
We once again had a few books in our read list that have been inspired by forthcoming films or films recently announced.
We read the original Frankenstein novel ahead of Guillermo Del Toro’s new version.
We read the excellent Mother’s Instinct by Barbara Abel, which is now a film starring Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain.
We read some of the Parasyte graphic novels, soon to be a Netflix TV series and we hope it can be as good, although from the trailer, it does seem to have removed a lot of the humor element from them.
Also, soon to be a TV series, we read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart, about a group of estranged friends and the consequences a horrific fire had on them, it should be a great watch, as was a great read.
We also read the highly enjoyable Five Nights by Rachel Wolf, we were sold by it being pitched as Succession on a Cruise Ship on the front, and the rich family in the book are just as messed up as the Logan Roy family.
BARKING MAD ABOUT APES
With the new Planet of the Apes movie getting ever closer, we have decided to revisit all the previous movies, including the Roddy McDowa1l starring series, the Tim Burton remake, and the most recent trilogy.
Luckily, we have Disney+ so have access to them all.
In addition to that, one of our cinema visits in April will be to see the return of King Kong, in Godzilla x Kong.
BARKING MAD ABOUT LOUIS GOSSETT Jnr
Sadly, the month ended, with the news that actor Louis Gossett Jnr, the first African American to win an Oscar for best supporting actor, for his role in An Officer and a Gentlemen, passed away.
As a huge fan of the Jaws franchise, we will remember him most from our regular rewatches of Jaws 3, in which he plays Calvin Bouchard.
Our favorite role of his though was as Drac in SyFy classic, Enemy Mine, which like Jaws 3 also stars Dennis Quaid.
He also has a huge set of fans for his works in the Iron Eagle franchise and is sure to win the hearts of many more, as he is providing one of the forthcoming voices in John Krasinski’s imaginary friend film, IF.
A rewatch or two of one of his back catalogue of films must be in order.
BARKING MAD ABOUT TV.
We will be wanting to watch Star Trek Discovery, especially as it is its last season.
A couple of graphic novels that we have enjoyed have both been adapted for Netflix and land this month, so we will be looking forward to Parasyte and Dead Boy Detectives.
So, they should keep us going.
BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA
Our hopeful April film visits will hopefully include Godzilla X Kong; Monkey Man and Abigail.
BARKING MAD ABOUT TRAILERS.
Two trailers for films that we cannot wait to see dropped in March.
Director Fede Alvarez brings us Alien Romulus, watch the trailer here.
And a teaser for our most anticipated film of the year, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice a long-awaited sequel which sees Michael Keaton return as Beetlejuice for director Tim Burton.
Watch the trailer here.
BARKING MAD ABOUT THEMED WATCHES
As we mentioned earlier, we will be doing an APE-ril as we revisit all the Planet of the Apes Films.
We are also planning an Acapella April as we revisited the Pitch Perfect trilogy.
There are a few animated films we have been meaning to catch up on so we will be doing a few Animated April themed watches.
Should we fit in a watch of The First Omen at the cinema, we shall also no doubt visit the original trilogy of The Omen movies that it is a prequel too.
