It’s been a mixed year for us with films.
The good news is our list is for once not filled with sequels, could original content finally be coming through?
In fact, we would go as far to say that it’s been a bad year for sequels with films like Zoolander 2 and Independence Day: Resurgence being particularly bad.
So here’s our top 10 for 2016 so far:
- Creed – Not a sequel as such, but a spin-off from the Rocky films

- X-Men: Apocalypse – Definitely a sequel here, yet we really enjoyed this despite poor reviews, we preferred it over Captain America: Civil War thanks in part to the feeling that we had seen less of it from a lighter trailer campaign.

- The Nice Guys – A great Buddy movie from writer/director Shane Black. We had no idea Ryan Gosling could be so funny

- Joy – David O. Russell and Jennifer Lawrence team up again, a great story about a single parent following her dreams and becoming a successful entrepreneur

- 10 Cloverfield Lane – Like Creed, this was not a direct sequel but a spin off from the original Cloverfield movie. A film that felt fresh due to the lack of publicity and trailers, the ending will divide most people’s opinion of the film.

- Hush – A film made for Netflix, was as good as any scary film we’ve seen in quite some time, we highly recommend it

- The Jungle Book – We were shocked by this, the animated version is an all time classic, but this was a visual treat and fantastic story telling.

- The Secret Life of Pets – The start and end are amazing for pet owners, but the run of the mill, lost and need to get home story was not so original. Don’t let that put you off though, great characters made this one of our years best!

- Deadpool – Much like Guardians of the Galaxy, this felt like a game changer for a comic book based film. It also showed that there is a place for the over the top, violent comic book action and not everything needs to be aimed at the 12/PG13 market

- Zootropolis – For a kids film, this was fantastic, great characters and also delivering important messages about how we should all get along
