Barking Mad About Films, TV, and Books

One man and his dog; both barking mad about films, TV, and books

Barking Mad About Our Top 10 Favourite Films

November 4, 2026 by Bill Boswell

Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again. This time we are doing something a bit more personal: our ten favourite films of all time, and why we love them. Films first, with our favourite TV shows and books to follow.

So, without any further ado, counting down from number 10…

Stack of Bill's top 10 favourite films on DVD and Blu-ray, from Jaws at the top to Blade at the bottom, with Stitch and Zero figures above
Our actual copies of the top 10, stacked in order (with a little shelf company from Stitch, Zero and a Gremlin)

10. Blade (1998)

When we first saw Blade, it was the first time we had seen a comic book film made for adults. It blends action and horror brilliantly, and Wesley Snipes is so good that we can’t ever imagine anyone else playing the role.

9. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)

This one really stands out. The stop motion is beautiful and you can see the Tim Burton influence all over it, the songs are brilliant and the story is great. You can watch it at Halloween or Christmas and it will make you feel part of the season, and it even has a great Jack and Sally love story at its core.

8. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

Our favourite of the franchise, possibly because we were that bit older when we first saw it. We meet Yoda, we get the Vader revelation, and it is perhaps the perfect example that a sequel can be better than the original.

7. Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989)

We love Keanu, and this shows how underrated he is. He may play to type, but he can do action and comedy and excel in both. The time travel story feels original and fun, and Keanu and Alex Winter are clearly friends in real life, as their chemistry shows so much. It also introduced us to the brilliant George Carlin, and its message of being excellent to each other resonates even more these days.

6. Gremlins (1984)

We love a creature feature and this is probably the best, although truthfully we often swing towards the daft but just as good sequel. We go with Gremlins because we watch it most festive seasons. The odd thing is we probably love the gremlins more than the Mogwai, and a hero called Billy, what’s not to love?

5. Fright Night (1985)

This one is pure nostalgia. When we were younger we used to avoid the bus shelter because its iconic poster scared us! On watching, it is the perfect blend of horror and comedy. Roddy McDowall is simply outstanding as Peter Vincent and Chris Sarandon is an amazing villain. We also love Part II, but we are not a fan of the remake.

4. Ed Wood (1994)

Tim Burton is without question our favourite director, and we love it when he does projects that aren’t remakes (his Alice in Wonderland is probably our least favourite of his films). Ed Wood is everything we want from film: a great story about the love of film. It was great to discover Ed Wood’s own films afterwards too.

3. Lilo & Stitch (2002)

Easily our favourite animated film. It is a beautiful story, Stitch is an amazing character and it is full of great characters. The live action version is watchable, but it will never be as perfect as this.

2. John Wick (2014)

This may seem like an odd choice, as normally we hate a film where a dog dies (hence why we despised The Odyssey). But with Teddy being a small and defenceless Chihuahua, much like John Wick’s puppy, it is the perfect way to express how we would want to react if anyone ever hurt her.

1. Jaws (1975)

Jaws may be a shark, but as a film it is the G.O.A.T. It is more than a shark film, it is about the characters. Perfect director, cast and score: it has absolutely no flaws. We have had a love of sharks ever since and can’t stop watching shark films, no matter how bad, but it always comes back to Jaws. It is the film we have watched the most, at least once a year, and probably the film we have the most merch for.
