What inspiration have you had to watch a film? For us, at Barking Mad About Films it could be anything. As an example, whilst out for a drive, the song Live it Up by Mental as Anything came on the radio.
It’s a song I like, so much so I have it on 12-inch vinyl, not a download. I know it as being featured in the Paul Hogan Eighties classic, Crocodile Dundee, and just recalling that brought back memories of This is a Knife etc and gave us a real urge to watch it again.
Other times it has happened, we were watching a TV show called The Hotel Inspector, the owner of the hotel being helped by the inspector wanted a hotel that ‘if he built it, they would come’ and we straight away had an urge to watch Kevin Costner in another Eighties classic, Field of Dreams.
Of course, sometimes choosing what to watch, we do plan, ahead of watching Jurassic World and Mad Max: Fury Road we watched both the original films for those films. A process we will repeat before seeing Ghostbusters and Star Trek Beyond we’re sure.
With studios bringing back classics after a long period of time, such as the 20 years, we watched Independence Day prior to watching its sequel.
We will also soon watch Finding Nemo, ahead of seeing the long awaited sequel, Finding Dory.
Sometimes it can be just a Facebook post that does it, a post celebrating the original release date of a film some time ago, the best example of recent times was the celebration of Back to the Future day because we reached the day they visited in Back to the Future Part Two.
The Calender also can inspire you, Halloween on Halloween; The Grinch at Christmas or a RomCom for Valentines!
It can also be down to a change in viewing habits, we discovered the excellent show, Suits, a while back. As we loved the actors in their weekly role, we wanted more so you look for their back catalogue of work. Lead actor Gabriel Macht we rediscovered in Frank Miller’s film The Spirit for example.
We regularly tune into Better Call Saul, and it was great seeing Saul himself, Bob Odenkirk in Wayne’s World 2 as another example.
One of the more common ones of late can be after watching a reboot/remake, we rushed out to watch the original versions of The Fog and Poltergeist after really not enjoying the new retelling of them.
With ever changing technology, you may revisit a film because it is an improved print or digitally restored, or even an extended/director’s cut. We are looking forward to seeing Jaws 3D for the first time in 3D when it is released on BluRay.
