Barking Mad About Films Look Back at June 2025

July 1, 2025 by Bill Leave a Comment

Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again and time for our JULY Barking Mad About Films Newsletter.

So, without any further ado, welcome to our JUNE review….

BARKING MAD ABOUT JUNE

We continued our quest to watch at least one film a day, so included may classics as well as new titles.

The highlight, was our annual watch of JAWS, made more significant this year by the fact that it was its 50th Anniversary.

This sent us on a little challenge to watch the three leads in other movies, we saw Roy Scheider in David Cronenberg’s classic Naked Lunch.

We then did a Robert Shaw double, the dated horror A Reflection of Fear and another classic, this time being The Sting.

Our Richard Dreyfuss choice also counts as a performance for another film with sharks as we watched Into The Deep.

We watched the 4 John Wick Films, with a break after 3, as we knew we wanted to see Ballerina which was set in the events before the fourth film.

Another film we enjoyed this month, which we watched as we were waiting for the fourth season of The Bear to drop, was Nonnas on Netflix.

This was based on a true story and was an enjoyable tale of starting up a restaurant, with the menu based on foods we loved made by our Nonnas/Grandmas.

A lot of our film choices are made by feeling inspired to watch, for example after watching Netflix series, Sirens, we had a real urge to revisit and so watched the Nicole Kidman version of The Stepford Wives.

We did a Becky double, with a rewatch of the original, prior to the sequel, the Wrath of Becky being uploaded to Netflix.

Another random double we did was a revisit of What Women Want, which inspired us to watch its reboot, What Men Want.

We caught up with two films based on books we had read, The Outrun and Small Things Like These, both led by fantastic lead performances.

Inspired by M3gan sequel redemption, we had to revisit Sonny’s robot redemption in Will Smith blockbuster I, Robot.

We read the biography of Ian Ogilvy this month and inspired by our favourite former Simon ‘The Saint’ Templar, watched him in Puppet Master 5, We Still Kill The Old Way and We Still Steal The Old Way.

Other than that, it was a mixed bag of watchable movies, as ever you can find every film we watch by following us on Letterboxd.

BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA

We started our June cinema visits with a return to the world of John Wick, with spin-off movie, Ballerina which we loved.

We then saw the latest in the 28 franchise, which saw us see the events this time 28 Years Later.

We ended the month with the return of M3gan in her new updated form of M3gan 2.0.

BARKING MAD ABOUT ROBIN WILLAMS STILL

We continued trying to watch a Robin Williams film every Wednesday.

He is always a joy to watch, the standout was incredibly a first time watch of Good Will Hunting.

Robin is simply exceptional in this truly wonderful film and truly deserved his academy award for it.

It was Father’s Day this month, so took that as inspiration to watch Robin in the film of the same name, opposite Billy Crystal.

We also saw him in The Face of Love, a great concept of a woman falling in love after her husband had died, with someone who looks almost the same, Robin was great in an extended cameo as always.

BARKING MAD ABOUT BOOKS

We, as always read a few books in our read list that have been inspired by forthcoming films or films recently announced.

Starting with a fantastic return to the world of Panem with Sunrise on the Reaping which tells us of the events that happened when Haymitch competed in The Hunger Games.

Other highlights was the really enjoyable Matt Haig book, The Midnight Library and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke.

Two books we read that are in the works for TV adaptations were Anna O by Matthew Blake and The Spy Coast by Tess Gertissen.

We read Mix Tape by Jane Sanderson after hearing the TV adaptation had been picked up by the BBC.

And a real highlight was Willy Vlautin book, The Night Always Comes, which sees a girl trying to better her situation but every page she seems to make things worse.

We really couldn’t put it down and can not wait to see its Netflix adaption starring Vanessa Kirby & Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Much like the films, we do log every book we read and you can follow us on Good Reads.

BARKING MAD ABOUT TV.

We watched some great shows in June:

We loved the return of The Bear, which remains one of our favourites.

We continue to love Poker Face and the old favourite that is Hudson and Rex.

We loved new medical comedy St.Denis Medical from the creator of Superstore, so always seemed likely we would.

On Netflix we enjoyed Netflix shows Sirens; The Waterfront and even though we had read the book it was based, we still enjoyed The Survivors.

Amazon however was a mixed bag, we watched two shows both based on books we had read, We Were Liars and The Other Sister, we definitely enjoyed the former, but both felt stretched by making 8 episodes.

BARKING MAD ABOUT JOHN GRISHAM.

A random showing on TV of A Time to Kill which we recorded, sent us on a rewatch of some films based on the works of author John Grisham.

We also watched The Client, Runaway Jury and The Firm.

The later two both having great Gene Hackman performances, and The Firm has also left us with adding the book’s sequel to our reading list.

BARKING MAD ABOUT JULY

Two of our most anticipated films are released in JULY.

For the cinema, it is full-on box-office season with a new Jurassic World movie, JW: Rebirth, Superman and the Fantastic Four, but hopefully some other gems may sneak in.

TV sees the return of two of our favourites, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the return of everyone’s favourite killer Dexter.

Having spend the end of June with The Bear, July we will start the final season of Squid Game.

We have no real rewatch plans, but we do have a craving to watch the previous 3 Harold and Kumar movies, after news that a fourth was in the works.

With Nobody 2 out in August, it may be time to revisit the original.

We also feel a rewatch of The Black Phone is due as we keep seeing the trailer for the sequel at the cinema now.
