What's This?

We watched Little Evil this week, which arrived directly to Netflix. We thought the trailer looked enjoyable but what really made us keen to watch this film is that it came from Eli Craig, the Writer/Director of one of our favourite horror comedies of recent years; Tucker and Dale vs Evil.

Now we find the best way to describe this film is a cross between the Omen and comedy classic Problem Child.

The film opens with us meeting newlyweds Gary (Adam Scott) and Samantha (Evangeline Lilly) a week after their wedding.

Gary has now moved into the home with Samantha and spends more time with her 6-year-old son, Lucas (Owen Atlas) from another relationship.

Gary tries to bond but Lucas tends to ignore him, on one attempt taking him to school, he received a call from the videographer Karl (T&D Vs Evil’s Dale, Tyler Labine) urging him to view the recordings he made for his wedding. He declines saying he wants to put the day behind them.

Later, whilst showing Father Gospel (Clancy Brown) a new property as part of his real estate dealer job, Gary receives a call from Lucas’s school saying he told a teacher to ‘Got to Hell’

Gary thinks this is nothing to be too concerned about until he learns that after this incident, the teacher jumped out the window and speared herself on the fence below.

After the incident, Gary ends up going to a counsellor, to deal with his issues of the change in his life, here he bonds with many members of the group, including Al (Bridget Everett); Larry (Donald Faison); Wayne (Chris D’Elia) and Victor (Kyle Bornheimer)

Inviting them all to Lucas’s birthday party where the hired clown accidentally sets himself on file. This concludes Gary to think that maybe Lucas is a little evil, looking for evidence he contacts Karl to see the wedding footage concerns he had, and he learns that the vicar was not talking in Latin but in a Satanic voice!

What follows is the attempts of Gary to bond with his adopted son, whilst being aware of Karl’s comments that Lucas was summoned by a cult.

After visiting one of Samantha’s exes,  Gabriel (Hank Harris) they learn that Lucas may indeed be the antichrist and he urges them to find Gozamel (Brad Williams) a demon hunter who gives them a knife to kill Lucas on hallowed ground.

With a big finale which sees Gary finding out the truth once and for all, as he may have to fight the devil and Miss Shaylock (Sally Field) from protective services as he vows to do the right thing by both Lucas and Samantha.

Now some of Netflix original films have been poor but this surpasses Hush as our favourite that they have streamed so far. If you have Netflix and like Horror Comedies we urge you to give Little Evil a Little Watch as we found it a lot of fun and more original than some of the big screen releases of late!

5 Star Review of Little Evil
Netflix brings us A Little Evil which we liked a lot. Great performances make this cross of The Omen and Problem Child a worthwhile watch and one of our favs of the year – 5 Popcorns
