Every week, I head off to our local Tesco (other stores are available) to do our weekly food shop. I have quite a good little deal going on with Mrs Barking Mad About Films, we go out for lunch first, then I leave her in the restaurant and do the shop. She uses it as thinking time to work on her business and it means I can whizz round the shop and do it faster.
Yes, we could do an online shop, but I like doing the shop! I get to see what’s new on the shelves, this is just one of the reasons why I’m old school and would still prefer to rent a DVD from a video store than watch online, surely I’m not the only one?
I, unfortunately, and the wife would be first to tell you this, can be swayed by movie offers, so always find myself bringing home something random from the store, from a low price DVD to a Minions themed car air freshener or coming home with a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed Wonka bar.
I’ve noticed that now the foods are getting themed too, growing up I was lucky to find a sticker or toy in my box of cereal. I especially have happy memories of Shredded Wheat, doing a Jaws 3-D promotion. Those days seemed to have gone, in favour of what would appear to be ways of getting our details; enter this competition or send off for this gift. Rather than include a competition offer or gift, now on shelves you can find movie specific cereal featuring Disneys Frozen and Star Wars.
And these 2 films are very popular for food products as also saw themed Pizzas and yoghurts for them as well. Wensleydale have used Wallace and Gromit on their cheese; Haribo now have sweets in the shape of Minions and you can even find your favourite movie characters in Pasta shapes, we had a tin featuring characters from Disney Pixar Cars the other day!
It’s not just confined to supermarkets either, we saw in a pet shop actual Scooby Doo Scooby snacks for dogs and from the Black Sheep Brewery, a Monty Python and the Holy Grail themed drink, Holy Ail (the Gr was before the Grail being crossed out)
For us, barking mad about the films, we think it’s great and love to see more if it, and thanks to Social Media we get to see the movie themed products from around the world. Two that stood out for us were Ben and Jerry’s, doing an Anchorman Scotchy, Scotchy Scotch flavour ice cream and Krispy Kreme doing Ghostbusters themed donuts, sadly neither made it to the UK =(
If done right, it can create a lot of buzz for both the film and the product manufacturers. Pepsi recently did very well from this when they made the actual Pepsi Perfect bottle for their drink from Back to the Future Part 2. We would draw the line at Jaws fish fingers (unless of course they were made without killing any sharks, as they are getting close to being endangered these days)
With the world of social media, its great to see ideas that people suggest they should do, Horror film Happy meals, Ice Screams based on movie characters, Dr Hannibal Lecter’s Chianti, Cookie Monster cookies etc.
We will of course, when see them, will share them on the BMAF Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/barkingmadaboutfilms
Do you eat the movies too?Have you seen a great movie themed product? What would you suggest they could do? As always we would love to hear from you!
