So with the many movies that get released, some are torn apart from critics and some are box office bombs however what might be considered the worst film ever still can be loved by others
Take a look at films like Rocky Horror Show and more recently showgirls, whilst considered flops on release they have risen from the ashes so to speak due to their loyal following and even had special editions DVD/Blu-Ray releases and re-releases in cinemas
Sure some films flop like John Carpenter’s The Thing, Blade Runner and more recently for me Dredd where you have to wonder why they did flop as they are great films but have had to wait for the home release to find the home and following they deserve
Even some of the minor hits live on with the rise in direct to video sequels, a minor hit starring Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Eliza Dushku, the film Wrong Turn has spawned no less than 5 sequels
Some films live on through comedy celebration with the event of Bad Cinema Clubs, the concept being a film is shown at the cinema deemed so bad that a comedian will do a commentary over the film with facts and fun observations for the films enjoyment (I have to admit I took advantage of this concept to see Jaws: The Revenge on the big screen, a film which whilst entertaining, it probably deserves to be ridiculed, roaring shark, trailing cables, daft storyline etc amongst some of the reasons and of course even Sir Michael Caine who starred in it has said I have not seen the film, but I have seen the pool it brought me)
Of course some films find a new audience due to the stars who have moved on to bigger things; Leonardo DiCaprio in Critters 3 is just one example
But in addition to all these reasons some films are a guilty pleasure to some for the reasons that they have meaning to the viewer, like a song that means something to a couple that perhaps they don’t want to admit to loving but to get the ball rolling I’m going to confess mine
It is a film that in 2000 was panned by critics and did poorly at the box office yet had a great attractive cast, was backed by heavyweight Jerry Bruckheimer and had a smash hit soundtrack which is probably owned by more homes than the film, it is of course Coyote Ugly
Concept wise, you could argue it was ahead of its time as it revolves around Violet a girl with an ambition to write songs but not have the confidence to sing them so not a million miles away from the monster hit Pitch Perfect of reason years and the hit TV Show Glee
It is a simple concept but for me it has the same feelings you would get from a sports film, the sportsman (in this case singer Violet) is not considered a champion (singer in this case) then to defy the odds, a chance encounter of having to sing to distract a bar fight (yes really) she finds the ability to sing in public for the first time but not sing her own songs but likely she has her trainer/mentor (in this case Boyfriend Kevin) who helps her overcome this fear (I don’t consider this to be a spoiler as like the sports movie in general, the underdog defies the odd to come out on top)
So judge me all you like but I love it, what are your film guilty pleasures let me know below:
