We love a creature feature so when we saw the first trailer for Life, we knew we wanted to see this one.
The real question is of course, is it a great space monster movie like Alien or is it another Alien v Predator dissapointment?
The cast is great so we had high hopes for this one written by Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick and directed by Daniel Espinosa.
A six-member crew on the international space station have a soil sample from Mars which after studying, shows the first signs of extra terrestrial life.
The organism is named Calvin after a school on earth. All seems to be going well until Calvin appears to go into hibernation, biologist Hugh (Ariyon Bakare) when trying to bring it to life is attacked when it awakes.
Rory (Ryan Reynolds) enters the lab to try and rescue Hugh. In the process of this rescue attempt Calvin manages to escape, putting the rest of the crew at risk, as it looks to stay alive.
First Kat (Olga Dihovichnaya) attempts to keep Calvin trapped in space, then new father Sho (Hiroyuki Sanada); Miranda (Rebecca Ferguson) and David (Jake Gyllenhaal) all try various attempts to kill the creature.
As you would imagine from a film of this nature, various members of the 6 man crew are attacked and killed by Calvin, leading to an eventual decision made that under no attempt can the creature get back to earth.
Will they success in getting Calvin into deep space and can any of the crew make it back to earth, well you will need to see Life to find out.
This was a real find, the film at times is quite tense and descriptions of this movie being Alien meets Gravity are pretty spot on. The film’s profile was raised prior to release with speculation it may be an origins story with news that the studio are to make a stand alone film of Marvel’s Spider-Man villain Venom, but we saw nothing to connect Calvin to that.
If you like a creature feature, this is well worth your time and whatever Alien: Covenant turns out to be like, we have at least had one good space monster movie this year!
