We, at BMAF, were most alarmed with the news that Steven Spielberg was taking Dreamworks from Disney to Universal. Nothing to be alarmed at, these things happen, Star Wars went from Fox to Disney recently and seems to be in safe hands or so we thought
If like us, you are Barking Mad about Films, you probably follow lots of movie-related sites and one post kept coming up; Spielberg to reboot Jaws and Back to the Future.
Firstly, to touch on Back to the Future, it does not need a reboot, the trilogy works brilliantly; I was off ill once and watch all 3 films back to back, it’s great to see the little jokes they do in all 3 films but I don’t wish to go on, that’s for another blog!
Jaws is my favourite film franchise ever, although my love of the sequels I am sure must come down to the characters that were established in the original and just a love of Shark films in general.
But, shall we say all the time I have had access to the internet, one thing keeps coming up, the word remake and it saddens me as much as when there was the talk of the film being re-released with a CGI shark, luckily it’s never happened!
Jaws is a film I have brought on VHS; DVD; DVD 20th Anniversary Edition and more recently it’s long awaited BluRay release (still would love the other 3 in that format too, especially as I’ve never seen the 3rd in 3-D which I am sure BluRay could offer) (this has since happened, review here: )
I have merchandise for it in a way that those Star Wars fans rushing out for the ‘Force Friday’ event recently would be proud of, every time it is shown on a big screen despite owning it on various formats, I’m there and the same for its sequels, I went a Bad Cinema Club (Film showing, where comedians generally, do a commentary over it) just to see Jaws: The Revenge on the big screen
I have a fascination for Sharks now, so much so my Wedding to Mrs BMAF saw our guests tables named after different sharks, with Jaws himself, the Great White being our head table so I shouldn’t be loving these films where Sharks are made to be the evil predator but I just love seeing them and sadly the truth is we are the real evil when you look at the damage of the shark fin trade that is making them nearly extinct
I love reading and watching everything I can on this movie, how it changed the way film releases happened, being the first ever Summer blockbuster, I love the fact that you can follow Mayor Larry Vaughan on Twitter, how the film always finds new ways to seem fresh, most recently a screening occurred where moviegoers watched the film in rubber rings in a pool, sounds excellent doesn’t it?
So I guess what I am saying is Hollywood, please if you must consider Jaws, a sequel returning to Amity or the proposed prequel concerning the U.S.S. Indianapolis from Quint’s haunting speech, I am sure I could live with ( I liked 3 and the Revenge remember =) but please NO REMAKE, how can you replace Scheider, Shaw and Dreyfuss?
