What's This?

Over the festive period, the BMAF household decided it was time to join so many of our friends and subscribe to Netflix.

It’s a format that concerns us as its popularity seems to again be pushing people to watch movies online, we would hate this to be at the expense of the DVD/BluRay hard copy

At the moment, there seems to be a world where both can exist, and being positive about it, the Netflix/Amazon Prime services of the world do seem to have pushed the price down on the hard copies.

Netflix has invested a lot in its own shows, Better Call Saul, a prequel to Breaking Bad, Orange is the New Black, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Marvel’s Jessica Jones being their most popular and known ones.

Netflix certainly is ideal for those who love Boxset watching with many a popular show available including the likes of House of Cards, Dexter, Lie to Me, Arrested Development, American Horror Story and classic BBC shows such as Parade’s End; Red Dwarf and Sherlock

Movie fans can see TV show spin-offs of popular movies such as Scream, Fargo and Bates Motel, telling the story of young Norman Bates and his mother from Psycho.

And this is part of the flaw for us, it is great that it has so many popular TV shows, certainly my watchlist is very full but we have found that the TV show selection far outweighs the movie selections.

There is certainly plenty to watch, including classics such as Big Trouble in Little China; Marvel Avengers; Star Trek: Into Darkness; Jack Reacher; Anchorman 2; World War Z; Babel & Good Will Hunting to name a few

It is an extensive list, for example; Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan‘s film before Creed, Fruitvale Station is available.

What Netflix does that is also good is suggest titles relating to those who watched, unfortunately as a big fan of TV show, Suits, I ended up watching B-movies with its stars, Gabriel Macht in direct to DVD sequel S.W.A.T. Firefight and Meghan Markle in RomCom When Sparks Fly.

The highlight for us from Netflix is however, discovering titles that we have not seen in years! Space monster fighting film Arena and robot fighting film Robot Jox. Classic horror films such as Psycho II; Childs Play films; Friday the 13th films; Saw Films; Re-Animator; Tremors; Event Horizon and older titles such as From Beyond; Night of the Comet and even Killer Klowns from Outer Space!

Of course, many a big title is missing, such as Jaws, Star Wars and various Disney titles

The TV titles seem to be added more frequently than movies, we struggled to find many recent releases, the most recent we noted was Pierce Brosnan film, Survivor and the John Cusack free, Hot Tub Time Machine 2

Don’t panic though as Netflix has many search engines so you find by Star; Director; Genre and even Sub-Genre

One of the good things that Netflix does, is that it is commited to making its own content including films with a new PeeWee Herman film coming shortly for example.

We’ve certainly got plenty to keep us going and for the more recent releases, you’ll still find us in the cinema =)

Do you subscribe to Netflix? What finds have you found? We would love to hear from you here at Barking Mad about Films
