Our latest rental was Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. A return to the character created by author Lee Child for Tom Cruise.
Based on the book of the same name, the film reteams Tom with his The Last Samurai director, Edward Zwick
The film opens up with Reacher (Tom Cruise) getting some corrupt police officers arrested for human trafficking. During this sequence, it is established that Reacher has formed a close friendship, despite not having met, with Major Susan Turner (Cobie Smulders) who suggests they meet for dinner to change that.
Reacher, with time on his hands, heads to see Turner to surprise her, but comes face to face with Colonel Morgan (Holt McCallany) who tells Reacher she has been arrested!
He learns from Turner’s attorney, Colonel Moorcroft (Robert Catrini) she is accused of the involvement of 2 soldiers murdered in Afghanistan! If that wasn’t shocking enough, he learns he is being sued by a woman who claims he is the father to her 15 year old daughter, Samantha (Danika Yarosh)
He goes to reach out to Samantha, but she wants nothing to do with him. Furthermore, when doing more digging into the case, Moorcroft has been killed and Reacher framed for it and arrested.
Whilst transported to the prison, he manages to escape and break out with Turner, as the two race against time to clear their names. Also taking Samantha with them, after learning she is a target to get to Reacher.
They learn there is a witness, Prudhomme (Austin Hebert) who can clear Turner’s name, but an assassin (Patrick Heusinger) will stop at nothing to eliminate them, as it comes clear that these murders are connected to something even bigger, going right to the top with possibly General Harkness (Robert Knepper) being involved.
When Morgan is killed, again Reacher is blamed so not only do they have an assassin chasing them down but also the military, led by Captain Espin (Aldis Hodge)
Can Reacher clear his and Turner’s daughter? Why were the soldiers killed in Afghanistan and does Reacher have a daughter? You will need to watch Jack Reacher: Never go back to find out.
Having not read the book, we can not compare, and if you a fan of this series of books, again it will depend on your opinion of Tom Cruise, as many were left fuming with his casting.
We at Barking Mad About Films, however have blogged our praise of Tom before and found this to be a good, solid action film and have no problem recommending it.
