What's This?

Today September 19th is the International Talk like a Pirate day http://www.talklikeapirate.com/ and what better film to suggest you enjoy on this day than the original (and by far the best) The Curse of the Black Pearl

This is one of those films that has been tainted by not so good sequels (3 at present with another one incoming) but the original is fantastic and gave Johnny Depp the megastar status he has today (before this, he was probably known for Edward Scissorhands and his previous films prior Blow, Chocolat and From Hell, well they didn’t exactly break the box office)

You can tell how good this film is simply by the fact that in recent years Roman Polanski with Pirates in 1986 and Renny Harlin with Cutthroat Island in 1995 were both high profile flops but this 2003 hit based on a Disney theme park ride was a massive franchise creating hit

The storyline is simple enough, having had his ship, the Black Pearl, stolen by Barbossa (a great villain performance from Geoffrey Rush) the roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow (an Oscar nominated turn from Johnny Depp) heads into port with plans to get his beloved boat back

Through a turn of events which involve kidnapping Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) Jack, is aided by Elizabeth’s friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom)  the 3 are on a collision course with Barbossa but little do they know that he and his crew have been cursed by the treasure they have stolen and are now forced to live forever as the undead

Aided by a great supporting cast, which includes the likes of Jack Davenport; Keven McNally; Jonathan Pryce and Mackenzie Crook, with fantastic swash buckling action scenes, some great jokes, pirate ship battles and action this really is a must see as a great fun ride which you won’t need plenty of rum to enjoy it’s just a shame that some of the fun left the pirates in the following sequels but hopefully the forthcoming Dead Men tell no Tales which brings Will Turner back will change this

What’s your favourite pirate film? Did you enjoy the sequels? Can you think of a better pirate than Johnny Depp, we’d love to hear from you
