One man and his dog; both barking mad about films

What film would you love to have a sequel?

What's This?

This year has been a good year for film follow-ups, Mad Max: Fury Road  & Jurassic World are stand outs, so whilst enjoying this little high it got me thinking what film would I like a sequel too.

I am a massive fan of the creature feature and one film that left me dying for more was 1998’s Deep Rising, if you’ve seen it you’ll agree the ending almost demands it, if not and you like a creature feature/B movie you could do a lot worse than give it a try

It’s director Stephen Sommers went on to direct big box office monsters, The Mummy, Mummy Returns, Van Helsing & G I Joe and also Odd Thomas, another film worth your time you may have missed.

The premise of Deep Rising is simple enough, the worlds most luxury cruise liner, The Argonautica (almost spot on to those now shipping holiday makers for P&O and Royal Caribbean) runs aground in the middle of the ocean.

A gang of, I guess pirates is the word, have hired a boat crew, including Treat Williams as Finnegan & Kevin J O’Connor as Joey (who would follow director Sommers to the Mummy as Benny) to take them to the cruise ship, after agreeing with the cruise captain (Anthony Heald) to help them to steal all the riches onboard from the wealthy cruisers.

However, once onboard they find everyone is dead except the ships captain & criminal stowaway, Trillian, played by Famke Janssen, former bond girl, Xenia Onatopp from James Bond: Goldeneye.

Who killed all the crew? A gigantic sea monster that’s what! Now instead of a mission to get off with all their riches it’s a mission to get off with their lives

Treat is superb in the loveable Han Solo type role. Kevin is brilliant as the put upon mechanic and comedy sidekick & Famke is more than just eye candy, helping the boys get off the monster infested luxury liner.

The villains led by Wes Studi including Jason Flemyng & Djimon Hounsou are also great cast support & have memorable creature deaths.

You can see why Stephen got the chance to direct big box office fare with the Mummy, as this is way above your average B movie fare

Oddly, via IMDB,  it states Harrison Ford was to be the lead with a much bigger budget, but the film works much better in its B movie format in my opinion.

The estimated $45m budget is well spent & the CGI creature effects are great.

The film is a tight 97 minutes, so why not follow the films tagline of ‘Full Scream Ahead’ and after say ‘Now What’ & hope for a sequel one day

I chose Deep Rising for this article as watch it regularly before I go on a cruise, our holiday of choice these days but we would love to know what film you’d love a sequel to?
