On a recent trip to town Mrs Barking Mad (I need a better name for her =) was getting her haircut so I was left to wander around town and maybe find a film for us to watch for our Sunday movie night. Sadly the ever popular trend to watch films online means the likes of Woolworths & HMV have gone from our high streets
But an unexpected source of film finding has been the charity shop, you’ll normally find a spew of titles that have been disposed of for many reasons including space, duplication from couples moving in together, discs purchased again as a special edition or in a box set or upgrading to BluRay
Occasionally however, you’ll find a title you’ve never heard of and from my local RSPCA I found for a small fee of £2 The Decoy Bride, a RomCom starring my favourite timelord David Tennant, Alice Eve most recently seen in Star Trek Into Darkness & with the film being set on the fictional Scottish Island of Hegg, Trainspotting’s Kelly MacDonald
The story is simple enough, Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) is Hollywood’s big name actress who is marrying author James Arber (David Tennant) Every time the couple try to tie the knot, the press are there to ruin it!
James, the author character had written a smash romantic novel set on the Hegg Island, so Lara plans to get married on the island in the book’s castle but the twist is that it is no more than a ruin, James has never been to Hegg & made the sites and people up
This is one of those simple romance films that the UK does so well, setting & story wise it is similar to the film Leap Year
The decoy bride of the title is Kelly’s ‘Katie’ character who is the only under 30 year old on the Island not married so when a fake wedding is set up she is the chosen one to put off the press who have been tipped off
Yes, you can predict the ending a mile off but it is a lot of fun as you would expect as written by & starring Sally Phillips with added support from Michael Urie, who you may know from TV hit Ugly Betty
Soul searching from characters is done & the expected happy ending for all cast is in place but I enjoyed its simple charms
So why not ignore the streaming & support a charity shop a chance, you never know what you may find, if it’s a cracker let us know in the comments or join us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/barkingmadaboutfilms?ref=hlR
