Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again and time for our June Barking Mad About Films Newsletter.
In our newsletter, we will aim to share some of our thoughts and watches of the month and what we are looking forward to in the next month.
So, without any further ado, welcome to our JUNE update….
BARKING MAD ABOUT JUNE
This month was full of rewatches and first-time views.
We started the month by watching The First Omen on the first, we then followed that with the original on the 6th hour of the 6th Day of the 6th month, followed by its sequels.
Our Jodie Foster watches continued with Echoes of Summer; The Mauritanian and her French speaking cameo in A Very Long Engagement.
We did a double bill of the two District 13 French parkour inspired action movies.
A real highlight was the first-time watches of Donnie Yen martial art masterpieces IP Man 1 and 2.
We had a second time watching Wicked Little Letters and it still remains one of our highlights of the year.
On Mel Brooks 98th birthday we revisited Blazing Saddles and also watched Spaceballs, after it was announced that a sequel is in the works.
We visited box office under performers John Carter and The Legend of Tarzan, both are worthy of a second chance.
We had a great Robert De Niro double bill of Ronin and The Fan.
We also saw a film that is often loved for gifs and clips on social media, the crazy Hard Ticket to Hawaii, if you have ever wanted to see a snake defeated by a rocket launcher this could be the film for you.
We watched 2 Universal Solider sequels that were instantly forgettable, especially as Van Damme was in either.
Netflix original films are normally a very mixed bad, but we loved Hitman and French shark thriller Under Paris.
We also did a double bill of the Carlito’s Way movie, the first with Al Pacino, was great, its direct to DVD sequel not so much, but it did have a blink and you may miss it appearance from TV’s future Will Trent, Ramon Rodriguez.
We also saw Al in Insomnia, Sea of Love and Frankie and Johnny, which we watched as part of a mini season set around the food industry as we waited for the third season of The Bear.
As ever, you can see every movie that we watched on our Letterboxd Account.
BARKING MAD ABOUT BIOPICS AND DOCUMENTARIES.
This month we saw Daniel Radcliffe in the great Weird: The Al Yankovic Story biopic.
And we watching some great documentaries in I Am Celine Dion and James Blunt: One Brit Wonder and tribute films Remembering Gene Wilder and Jim Henson Idea Man.
BARKING MAD ABOUT REMEMBERING THE GREATS
We did another Louis Gossett Jr watch, this time we saw him opposite Chuck Norris in Firewalker.
We will also be looking to watch some films to remember the great Donald Sutherland who passed in June, we had only watched him recently in Space Cowboys and he will be missed.
BARKING MAD ABOUT THE CINEMA
We managed four visits to the cinema in June.
The surprise stand out was Bad Boys: Ride or Die, four films in and the partnership of Smith and Lawrence was as good as it always has been, in fact, it was probably the one we enjoyed the most since the original.
We absolutely loved the tale of friendship and being part of a community that was The Bikeriders, the cast of Tom Hardy, Jodie Comer and Austin Butler were all fantastic but a special mention to Michael Shannon, who stole every scene he was in.
We also saw Sting about a huge growing spider that was a lot of fun, even if it did spend a lot of time during the film, terrorizing a Chihuahua.
As always, we are a sucker for a shark film, and the chance to see Something in the Water was one we couldn’t avoid, it was certainly watchable, but films like Open Water and The Reef did the concept better.
BARKING MAD ABOUT BOOKS
We once again had a few books in our read list that have been inspired by forthcoming films or films recently announced.
The first was Night Bitch, this is soon to be a film starring Amy Adams, in which she plays a struggling mother who gets dog tendencies.
Also in development for a film was Romantic Comedy, which as the title suggests was a fantastic romcom about a ‘Saturday Night Live’ like sketch show writer who ends up in a relationship with a huge music star who is booked to be a guest on the show.
We read Beacon 23, a great SyFy tale, we would compare it to the Martian. It is now a TV series which in the UK you can see on Paramount Plus.
We also read Quint, an imagined prequel of the life of the Jaws shark hunter.
Fear was a page turning read about a family who believe they are being stalked, and is soon to be a TV series for Amazon starring In The Line of Duty star Martin Compston.
We also read the tale of a travelling salesman who has to rebuild his relationship with his son, after his mother dies, The Legend of Bunny Munro written by Nick Cave and soon to be a Sky Tv series starring Matt Smith.
Clickbait was a great tale about a youtuber reinvestigating a death of a man who was last seen with the top tv reality show family.
After all that we read a lighthearted read about coping with family on holiday from comedian Jack Whitehall, with help from his parents of course.
BARKING MAD ABOUT HOME VIEWING.
As previously mentioned, we feel we need to revisit some Donald Sutherland classic movies to remember him by.
With our Sundays no longer having Hudson and Rex showing as the current season has ended, we feel a rewatch of the original dog detective, Jerry Lee in the K9 trilogy will be getting a rewatch.
Almost a tradition now, but Jaws will no doubt get its annual 4th of July watch from ourselves.
BARKING MAD ABOUT DEADPOOL.
July also sees Deadpool 3 in cinemas and we are sure we will be fitting in a rewatch of the first two movies before we take our seat in the cinema
BARKING MAD ABOUT TV.
June gave us returns of three of our favourites in Hudson and Rex; The Bear and Doctor Who, now all devoured, we will be looking for new watches.
Inspired by the upcoming election, we have been watching comedy classic The Thick of It.
A real surprise was how much we enjoyed the Netflix spin off to The Gentlemen, it wasn’t as good as the film, but it definitely left us wanting more.
We enjoyed the TV adaptation of Insomnia on Paramount+, we also enjoyed Under the Bridge on Disney+
Current shows we are enjoying are Star Wars tale, The Acolyte, ITV drama Douglas is Cancelled and we have started the TV adaptation of Beacon 23 on Paramount+
Going into July, by far the standout, and we would say is our current favourite TV show, based on the great Karin Slaughter books, Will Trent returns for season 2 on Disney+.
We are looking forward to A Good Girls Guide to Murder on BBC having read the book it is based on.
So Help Me Todd, the second and sadly final season returns to Alibi and we will be watching.
It has been announced that the BBC are going to be showing the TV adaptation of Apples Never Fall and again having read the book, we will be looking out for that one.
BBC drama, The Jetty starring Jenna Coleman also looks like one to watch.
BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA
Our July visits will include Deadpool 3 as previously mentioned. We are also planning to see The Quiet Place prequel and Maxxxine, the end to Ti West trilogy, which previously included Pearl and X.
BARKING MAD ABOUT OUR BLOGS
It is the time of the year when we need to think about our halfway point of the year top 10, it is going to be difficult however as been some great films, so we need a longer think on it, so watch this space =)
