Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again and time for our May Barking Mad About Films Newsletter.
In our newsletter, we will aim to share some of our thoughts and watches of the month and what we are looking forward to in the next month.
So, without any further ado, welcome to our May update….
BARKING MAD ABOUT MAY
This month was an incredible average month for our viewing at home, in fact it felt that we rated more films 3 stars than any other month.
So, The Highlights
After we saw Furiosa, we re-watched Mad Max: Fury Road and it is just as thrilling on every watch.
Before we saw Ryan Gosling as a stunt man in The Fall Guy, we revisited him as a stunt man in Drive and it is still a great action thriller.
Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock reunited to do an interview about making Speed for the 50mph Pod, and it inspired us to revisit the brilliant classic action film.
Two films from our childhood we revisited gave very different experiences, Disney classic, Dragonslayer, is still a great fantasy adventure with a great looking dragon.
We could not say the same for horror classic, The Gate which did not stand up to the test of time for us sadly.
On the 21st and 22nd, we took inspiration to watch great comedy buddy movies, 21 and 22 Jump Street again.
We did a double bill of the George A Romero original classic, The Crazies, and its remake, which we feel, but only in way of effects was slightly better.
Randomly we saw a couple of Scorpion King films, 2 and 4, neither set the world alight but it does bug us, that we have not seen the third one ha-ha.
We revisited the two Antonio Banderas ‘Zorro’ movies and whilst both are enjoyable adventure movies, both we felt were way too long and could have been done with being shorter.
We revisited dog horror, The Breed, after hearing it was subject to a reboot, which given the concept, hopefully can be better.
That being said, with some of the dogs being killed, it probably wasn’t one for us, but was good seeing the likes of Michelle Rodriguez in an earlier role.
We also had a first time watch of Sean Connery movie, Just Cause, which we loved, we only heard about it as a TV series is in the works.
The lead is expected to be Scarlett Johansson, who actually played the daughter of the Sean Connery character in the original movie.
Our surprise of the month was B-movie, Tammy and the T-rex which we loved, in which Denise Richards reunites with her murdered boyfriend, played by Paul Walker, whose brain has been put in a T-Rex.
As ever, you can see every movie that we watched on our Letterboxd Account.
BARKING MAD ABOUT REMEMBERING THE GREATS
Sadly, this month we lost king of the B-movies, Roger Corman so we revisited Death Race 2000 which he produced.
It felt more like the Wacky Races cartoon we grew up with, than the rebooted Jason Statham/Luke Goss series but still crazy fun.
We also watched Frankenstein Unbound, an enjoyable time travel film which he directed.
We also lost classic character actor, Dabney Coleman, and we revisited his great action comedy, Short Time.
In the film Dabney plays a cop trying to get himself killed, so his family can get his life insurance payout, definitely one to look out for if you’ve never seen it.
We also had another Louis Gossett Jr rewatch, with his Top Gun like Iron Eagle, plus got to hear his voice as the voice of Lewis in IF.
BARKING MAD ABOUT THE CINEMA
We managed four visits to the cinema in May.
We started the month with the excellent stunt team tribute film, The Fall Guy.
If we were truly honest, we had low expectations going into Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
The previous trilogy was perfect, and we were not sure it needed a new sequel series reboot.
But it was excellent and appears even after 10 movies, the apes together are still strong.
Sadly, we did not love IF as much as we hoped, it was sweet and sentimental enough, but never as funny as we had hoped, a real shame for us.
Finally Mad Max: Fury Road prequel Furiosa was an action-packed joy.
But worryingly both this and The Fall Guy, which we both loved, have had a disastrous box office run and questions are now being asked if Cinema is in trouble.
BARKING MAD ABOUT BOOKS
We once again had a few books in our read list that have been inspired by forthcoming films or films recently announced.
The first was Cold Storage, from legendary screen writer David Koepp, about a fungus that attacks a town, full of exploding animals, a film is soon to be released starring Liam Neeson.
We also read The Last Ronin, an excellent graphic novel which will be the basis of the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles R-rated movie.
It is set in the future and only one Ninja Turtle is left, to go up against The Shredder’s grandson, with help of the daughter of April O’Neill and Casey Jones.
We read The Crow Girl which is to be a TV series starring Eve Myles, this is a great read if fans of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series.
We also read For the love of Julie, the tragic story of Ann Ming desperately seeking justice for the murder of her daughter, that she fights the justice system to get the killer of Julie tried on Double Jeopardy which had previously been not an option.
It is soon to be a drama for ITV starring Sheridan Smith.
We also read two biographies, James Blunt’s Loosely based on a story, and inspired by the local elections, we read alien politician Count Binface’s book What on Earth
BARKING MAD ABOUT MINIONS.
We had Minion Monday’s throughout May as we watched the current 5 movies in the Minions series, whilst we enjoyed them, we feel we can wait to watch Despicable Me 4 at a later date, rather than the cinema.
BARKING MAD ABOUT TV.
All good things come to an end and sadly we will no longer be able to watch new episodes of Star Trek Discovery and sadly we felt the last season was possibly its weakest.
Also, on Paramount+ we have started watching Insomnia, a great thriller based on the book by Sarah Pinborough.
We have started Eric, a Netflix drama about a missing boy and his father played by Benedict Cumberbatch quest to find him, with he help of his son’s dream for a puppet on the show he works on.
Tokyo Vice returned to BBC for a second great season.
It has however mainly been about enjoying returns of some of our favorite shows in May in Doctor Who; Inside No9 and Hudson and Rex.
We are looking forward to the new season of The Boys and The Bear this month and new Star Wars show, The Acolyte.
.
BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA
Our June visits have not been as inspiring as last months but we hope to include Bad Boys 4: Ride or Die and The Watched (as we really enjoyed the book it is based on) in our visits.
BARKING MAD ABOUT REWATCHES
For June, we are planning to watch The Omen series, as Damien of course was born on the 6th hour of the 6th Day of the 6th Month.
With The Bear returning for a new season, we may seek out some other food establishment based films.
We were sad to miss Jodie Comer film,The End We Start From, as it did not show at our local cinema.
Having read the book, it definitely is one we want to see and it arrives on Netflix UK this month so we will give that a watch for sure.
Having read James Blunt’s book last month, we will also check out the companion documentary which hits Netflix this month.
Also on Netflix is Under Paris, which we will check out as we are a sucker for a shark movie.
Randomly we picked up in a charity shop, a Free Willy quadrilogy boxset so we may have to have Willy Wednesday’s to watch them.
We feel with Inside Out 2 in cinemas this month, we will revisit the original as it on Disney+
Also we feel a watch is due of the two Deadpool films with Deadpool and Wolverine release date getting closer.
We will also continue to watch some Jodie Foster films for our Foster Friday’s
