The Barking Mad About Films Top Five Favourite Movie Musicals

January 12, 2017 by Bill Leave a Comment

We at Barking Mad About Films are hopefully heading off to see La La Land, a new film musical from Damian Chazelle, the writer/director of Whiplash. This got us thinking of our favourite Film musicals os here are ours.

5. Tim Burton‘s Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

We knew we wanted to include a Tim film, but we went with Todd starring Johnny Depp, based on the Stephen Sondheim, this is probably the goriest musical we have every seen and worthy of its 18 certificate.

We of course highly recommend another Tim classic, The Nightmare Before Christmas.

4.  Team America: World Police

Matt Stone & Trey Parker‘s musical works are almost a guarantee of seeing, from their 1993 Cannibal! The Musical to present day where The Book of Mormon wows theatre goers and appears to be heading to the big screen too. We chose Team America for the film, as well as the songs, its use of puppets was hilarious as are the songs, but we obviously have a lot of love for South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut

3. Moulin Rouge

Having already had a box office hit modernising Romeo and Juliet, writer/director Baz Luhrmann Moulin Rouge was set in 1899 but told the story of a poet falling in love with a beautiful courtesan which upsets a  jealous duke, with modern day music including the music of David Bowie & Elton John

2. The Little Shop of Horrors

From Frank Oz, this brilliant musical of boy meets girl and his killer plant Audrey II is just fantastic, this Eighties film has a dream cast too, with the likes of Steve Martin; Bill Murray and Rick Moranis all on the cast, as well as legendary Motown singer, Levi Roots as the voice of the plant!

1. The Lion King

Disney have given us so many great films, with such memorable songs, but for us, it is The Lion King that wins our vote, it’s great Oscar-winning songs from Elton John and Tim Rice, with memorable characters, its more than a great musical, it’s a great film

The musical is something that has given Hollywood some great films, and it appears to be returning the favour with many films now heading to the stage

The film also offers promotional deals where you can get the DVD with the soundtrack for example so we are sure it’ll be here to stay, especially after the success of La La Land!

Do you agree with our top 5, if you don’t ‘Hakuna Matata’ =)

What are your favourite musical? We would love to hear from you
