Barking Mad About Films, TV, and Books

One man and his dog; both barking mad about films, TV, and books

The BMAF review of April 2024

April 30, 2024 by Bill Leave a Comment

Hi, it is Bill and Teddy the Chihuahua again, as it is time for our April Barking Mad About Films Newsletter.

In our newsletter, we will aim to share some of our thoughts and watches of the month and what we are looking forward to in the next month.

So, without any further ado, welcome to our April update….

April Newsletter
Our newsletter that shares our rewatches and first time watches of April 2024

BARKING MAD ABOUT APRIL

This month, amongst the films we watched, we did a rewatch of all Nine of the existing Planet of the Apes movies, as we look forward to seeing the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Check out our blog here.

We revisited The Butterfly Effect trilogy; well, we revisited the first film and had first time watches of its two direct to DVD sequels, neither which match the greatness of the original.

We also watched two films about the 1972 true story of survival of a Uruguayan rugby team involved in a plane crash, and their attempts to survive, first was Alive and then Society of the Snow.

We also started the month with a rewatch of the Pitch Perfect trilogy.

Looking ahead to wanting to see The Fall Guy, we also revisited some other TV shows that had been adapted for the big screen.

We fitted in a couple more Jodie Foster films for our rewatch of her back catalogue.

We also revisited An Officer and a Gentlemen, as a tribute to Louis Gossett Jr, who sadly passed away.

We also did a random blue trilogy of Betty Blue, Blue Velvet and Blue Juice.

As ever, you can see every movie that we watched on our Letterboxd Account.

BARKING MAD ABOUT THE CINEMA

We managed three visits to the cinema in February.

We started the month with the dream team up of Godzilla and King Kong in Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire.

It was a real cinematic film, and it was nice to see another monkey in King Kong amongst all the Planet of the Apes movies.

We also saw Dev Patel’s excellent film, Monkey Man.

We ended the month with Abigail, a great ballet dancing vampire film from the team that gave us Scream 5 and 6 and the excellent Ready or Not.

BARKING MAD ABOUT BOOKS

We once again had a few books in our read list that have been inspired by forthcoming films or films recently announced.

We read Beyond the Wand, a great read about Tom Felton’s experience as a child actor to today, with a large part of course concentrating on his time on the Harry Potter film sets.

We also read three books that are all to be movies in the future.

We read a young adult mystery novel, Turtles all the way down by John Green.

Beach Read by Emily Thomas which follows the relationship of two authors, who challenge each other to write a new book, but in a different genre to what they are known for, whilst also getting closer to each other.

It should be a great romantic drama when it hits the screen.

We also read an exorcism based read in A Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay, which should provide some frights when it hits the screen.

BARKING MAD ABOUT MINIONS.

With Despicable Me 4 in cinemas, we have decided we are going to watch the previous 3 movies and the 2 minions’ prequels this month.

BARKING MAD ABOUT MAD MAX

With Mad Max prequel Furiosa in cinemas, we are pretty sure we will follow it with a rewatch of the other four films in the franchise, any excuse to watch Fury Road again.

BARKING MAD ABOUT TV.

We have started to watch Paramount+ show  Star Trek Discovery and it still hurts that it will be its last season.

Also, on Paramount+ we will check out the Sonic the Hedgehog spin off show, Knuckles.

Like most people we watched the excellent Netflix drama Baby Reindeer,  which we did in almost one sitting.

We also liked but did not love Fallout on Amazon Prime, we are sure fans of the game will enjoy it a lot more.

We also really enjoyed The Wicker Man inspired The Red King and the most recent season of one of our favs in Resident Alien.

Both can be found on Now TV/Sky

We have started on Netflix,D Dead Boy Detectives, as fans of a graphic novels, it has started quite promising.

We will be very much looking forward to the return of some of our faovurite shows in May in Doctor Who; Inside No9 and Hudson and Rex.

.

BARKING MAD ABOUT CINEMA

Our hopeful April film visits will hopefully include The Fall Guy; If and Furiosa.
