We were wowed the other day to see Google were working on a universal translator to fit in the ear! An idea very much like the Babelfish, made famous in The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy (Article via Gizmodo )
But it got us thinking of other film suggested ideas, that have become real, and incredibly there are many.
Driverless cars of films such as Logan’s Run or the Johnny Cabs of Total Recall seem increasingly closer
The apple watch made us think of Dick Tracy. On a similar theme, Star Trek featured a communicator, very much like the modern day flip phone and its medical teams use an item very similar to the smart tablets we use such as iPads.
Whilst films such as Doom; John Carpenter’s Ghosts of Mars; Red Planet and The Last Days of Mars may make us panic, about living on Mars now, it may one day be possible. Space stations now exist, luckily no Star Wars Death Star yet though!
The Matrix and Mission Impossible had us all in fear of being tracked, but again, the use of GPS seems to make this all possible.
The gesture-based user interface of Minority Report also exists now.
What seemed like funny ideas for comedies, such as the Naked Body Scanner of Airplane II do now exist in a form now as does 3D printing, suggested for making girls in Weird Science.
It’s not just SciFi films where these ideas come from, the family favourite, Short Circuit, is now a reality with the military working with robots for checking out bombs etc!
The Blade Runner digital billboards are also now very much common place.
Last year, Back to the Future Day also showed up how much Back to the Future II predicted right:
A dog was walked by what we now know as Drones; Mobile Payment Technology was used when Marty was asked to make a donation for the clock tower; Fingerprint recognition from Jennifer opens her house door;
Mobile Payment Technology was used when Marty was asked to make a donation for the clock tower; Fingerprint recognition from Jennifer opens her house door;
Fingerprint recognition from Jennifer opens her house door;
Hands-free gaming is suggested when Marty is mocked for playing an arcade game with his hands;
It also predicted smart clothing and wearable technology, Nike even plan to make auto-lacing shoes;
Video phones now are common place for use with apps such as Skype and Hoverboards were even created to be a top Christmas gift
Films have always predicted ideas, some considered odd from way back, include space travel so who knows what they will get right next, we’re just waiting for Jaws 19 in Holomax and a trip to Jurassic Park =)
What film predictions that have come real do you love? We would love to hear from you here at Barking Mad About Films
