On Sunday, in the Barking Mad about Films household, it’s movie night. This is when I, with Pepper and Mrs. BMAF, head for our sofa and watch a film, we all want to watch at the end of a busy week.
To aid us in this quest, we have the minimum subscription to Lovefilm from Amazon, as although we are lucky enough to have an Amazon Prime subscription, sometimes you just want access to the latest releases in a low-cost way! This consists of 3 films (Or TV Shows) a month, which you can have one at a time!
Now I must admit, in days of streaming, I do find this service enjoyable, as it gives a lucky dip to your viewing! Of course, you can narrow it down, by selecting your choices as High/Normal/Low but that still doesn’t guarantee what you will get. For example, adding 1 film as High, does not guarantee it to be your next rental.
You can plan your viewing for your next disc, it doesn’t just come through your letterbox! You have an account where you can see what is or is not on the way, which can be managed online or through a dedicated app. Both options also let you find new releases and see what is coming soon to rent as well.
Not to say it is not without issue, due to the numerous licensing agreements with movie companies, sometimes that wait can be a while. As an example, a film from Universal Studios may be out to buy on a Monday, but it may be a few months later before it can be rented through Lovefilm.
It can also be fun not knowing what it is coming next! The last 3 choices have all been care of Mrs. BMAF.
Which can be a good thing too, after all, if one of my choices featuring monsters comes next (a Mrs. BMAF no watch), we have to resort to finding something on streaming service. That can take a while, memories of standing around in a video store, trying to decide what to rent, remember those days!
It is also nice to get something through the letterbox which is not a bill or junk mail, I’m sure you would agree!
it is also the ideal service, if you wanted to rent a box set for that TV series you always get told is amazing, but did not have the channel/subscription service it showed on. We would recommend the unlimited package though for box sets, as a rental is 1 disc, so a six-discbox set would be six rentals for example!
Lovefilm may have some discs that have been issued as film only editions made for rental. However, in general, most will still have the special features you would find on the retail edition, so an advantage for film fans to choose over streaming.
Another advantage for us is that our TV is 3D enabled, o we can rent these types of discs from Lovefilm too.
This may seem daft but for us it’s just another advantage of having hard copies of films, over the constant need for everything to be online.
Maybe that makes us old, but we will always champion films to be offered as both on and off line, how about you? We would love to hear from you here at Barking Mad About Films
